Your Cycle to Work Journey

Green Commute Initiative

Driven by passion. Defined by performance.

Ready to get a new bike? Green Commute Initiative (GCI) makes it easy to spread the cost of your bike and cycling equipment through the Government’s Cycle to Work scheme.

The scheme uses salary sacrifice, so you repay the cost through your payroll while benefiting from tax and National Insurance savings. It’s a flexible way to get the bike and equipment you want, whether you’re buying from a bike shop or directly from a manufacturer.

Before You Apply

First, decide what you’d like to buy. Your application is linked to a specific bike, retailer and total value, so it’s worth having everything lined up before you start.

You’ll normally need to know:

  • Which bike you want
  • Any accessories you’d like
  • Which retailer or manufacturer you’re buying from
  • The total cost
  • How long you’d like your salary sacrifice period to be

You can usually include accessories such as helmets, locks, lights and other cycling safety equipment.

Using Corporate GCI? Your employer will give you a GCI code, which you’ll use to access your organisation’s application page.

01Choose Your Bike

Choose from our network of registered bike shops and manufacturers across the UK. Visit our registered bike shop page to find a provider and enjoy savings of 28–47%.

Depending on your chosen retailer, you can usually:

  • Buy in-store
  • Order online
  • Reserve your bike for collection

If you’re buying from a bike shop, they may give you a quote that holds the bike price for a limited time while your application is processed. Some retailers may also ask for a refundable deposit.

Buying directly from a manufacturer? You may receive a reference number that lets you reserve your bike online for a set period.

Want more choice? You may be able to use a Commuter Wallet, depending on your employer’s scheme. This gives you approved funds to spend with participating retailers.

02Apply

Once you’ve chosen your bike and equipment, it’s time to apply through the GCI portal.

You’ll need to provide your:

  • Bike details
  • Accessories
  • Retailer or manufacturer
  • Total purchase value
  • Salary sacrifice period

Your employer will then review and approve your application.

03Sign Your Agreements

Once your application is approved, we’ll send the required agreements to you electronically.

These will usually include:

  • Salary Sacrifice Agreement
  • Hire Agreement

If your employer uses a benefits platform, they may provide their own salary sacrifice agreement instead.

Once everything is signed, GCI invoices your employer according to the agreed arrangement.

If you’re using a Commuter Wallet, you’ll then be able to access your voucher funds through the GCI portal.

04Get Your Voucher

Once your application has been processed, we’ll email you a Collection Voucher or approval confirmation.

Buying online? You can normally use your voucher code at checkout with a participating retailer.

If you paid a deposit to reserve your bike, this will usually be refunded once the voucher has been redeemed.

The retailer then redeems the voucher through the GCI portal.

05Get Your Bike

If you’re buying in-store, take your voucher or approval details with you and collect your bike and equipment.

Buying online? Your retailer or manufacturer will arrange delivery or collection once your voucher has been processed.

Then you’re ready to ride!

06Repay Through Your Salary

Your employer will put your agreed salary sacrifice in place from the following pay period.

Your repayments come from your gross salary before tax and National Insurance, which means you can make savings compared with buying your bike outright.

Exactly how much you save depends on your personal tax circumstances.

Good to know: the saving comes from payroll and tax efficiencies rather than a standard discount on the bike.

What Happens at the End of the Hire?

When your Hire Agreement ends, GCI will automatically move you into a free-of-charge loan agreement. This helps preserve your tax savings.

If ownership is transferred before the loan agreement ends, Benefit in Kind tax will apply.

Don’t worry — we’ll explain your options before your Hire Agreement comes to an end.

Which GCI Scheme Are You Using?

There are two GCI schemes, and the application process depends on which one your employer uses.

INSTANT

Our pay-as-you-go platform, ideal for SMEs and non-registered employers.

No code needed.

CORPORATE GCI

Designed for larger organisations with more than 1,000 employees.

Your employer will give you a GCI code, which you’ll use to access your organisation’s application page.

Not sure which one you’re using? If your employer has given you a GCI code, you’re using Corporate GCI. If you haven’t received a code, you’ll use INSTANT.
